Review “A heart-rending tale. with deep insights. The essay about the book is plain and unadorned, and completely in tune with the people and place. Highly recommended. In Yocum's poignant and hard-hitting new novel, THE ESSAY, he explores, with great insight and craftsmanship, the coal mines and out-of-the-way farms and rivers and Friday night football games of southeastern Ohio.

A few of the reviewers complained that the Verified Purchase. I gladly join the hundreds of other reviewers giving a full 5 stars to this novel! Reminds me a bit of "October Sky" which recounts author Homer Hickam's upbringing in his coal mine town and his escape to eventually become a NASA engineer.

But, the background in "The Essay" is far bleaker, foreboding and cruel, essay about the book, and there is not much optimism for the eventual well being of the lead character spoiler alert-you know the ending in the first chapter -but, even knowing the outcome, the path to get there is gripping. I thought the character development was excellent. A few of the reviewers complained that the characters were over stereotyped and unrealistic.

But, I think in a story with the rawness of emotion that is here, it is a minor issue, and I didn't find it distracting. The cruelness and crudity of the "bad folk" do make the "good folk" look too good to be true, but this actually adds to the emotional see-saw throughout the book. IMO, this was a first class page turner, and I would recommend it to all. I will have to read some more by this author. This book is set in a part of Ohio I've only visited once, but it left a great impression on me.

Even that one visit to the poorest place in Ohio, Vinton County, showed essay about the book that there are many teachers like Miss Singletary there; teachers who care deeply about their students and who go above and beyond to help them succeed. I can only imagine how poor Jimmy Lee Hickam's family truly was, living in the poorest section of the poorest county in Ohio.

The fact that this boy grows up to be a star of the school without the accompanying big ego that so often accompanies that "best" distinction says a lot about the teachers who saw his potential and took him under their wing. Jimmy Lee is resigned to his lot in life - the youngest son of an alcoholic, abusive father and no way to get around being sneered at as the brother of a convict and another brother who could be just as mean as his father.

Jimmy Lee starts out as a young naive boy and with the help of his coach, teacher, and recently paroled brother, learns what it means to be an adult, essay about the book. I hope the author writes a sequel so I can find out what Jimmy Lee's college years teach him and also learn more about his brother, Edgel.

What a marvelous read! I traveled to a similar section of the country years ago and was mostly curious about the setting for this novel plus I love books about rooting for the underdog! The prose is so beautifully descriptive of every aspect of the book - nature, essay about the book, the people, their hopes and dreams, angst and character.
